Layers of August 100x100cm acrylic on a deep edge cradled board

I painted this on a scorching hot day in August. Outside, the light was absolutely brilliant, but the studio was cool, shaded, and full of people drifting in to escape the heat. It had that lovely, slightly chaotic hum that seemed to feed the work.
I love painting on large boards — usually two or three at a time — so I can move quickly, play, and follow impulse. On the first few layers, the inks had run over the paint and dripped into what looked like the perfect slender vase, and that was all I needed to start exploring and find what I was looking for.
There were so many stages and so many layers to this piece. It shifted over and over until it suddenly felt resolved… and that’s when I knew it was done.
