A Quiet Stillness 100x100cm acrylic on deep edge cradled board
Painted during the same sun-scorched August as Layers of August, this one grew slowly in the cool studio while everyone outside was melting. It was one of those days where people wandered in just to escape the heat, and the gentle buzz in the room somehow fed into the paintings.
Working across the two big boards — my favourite way to paint — no plan or sketch, totally relying on intuition, moving quickly, scraping back, shifting things around until the shapes started to make sense. That grounded vessel form is one I know well, it arrived early and held everything together, while the softer shapes above seemed to hover in their own calm little world.
There are so many layers in this piece, pushed back and pulled forward over and over until it finally reached that moment I love — where everything settles, quietens, and I know I’m done.
