Go Large 3-Day Workshop July 10th

Service Description

Go Large is a three-day workshop for painters with some experience who want to work bigger, bolder, and more freely, and explore how my way of working might influence their own process or style. This isn’t a still life workshop. Instead, we take the principles of Abstract Familiarity: simplification, strong composition, layering, scraping back, and intuitive decision-making, and use them to push work in a more loose, distorted, and creatively interesting direction, whatever you’re drawn to painting. At the heart of my teaching is the process of painting itself. We look closely at composition and colour, and spend time noticing what’s working in a painting, what isn’t, and what small shifts might move it on. I don’t teach a linear, step-by-step process, and I won’t be guiding individual styles. The focus is on how you work, not what you end up with. Working on a large scale changes everything. Marks become more physical, decisions happen faster, and overthinking has far less room to take hold. Over the three days, paintings are built, challenged, pulled apart, and reworked, often many times! The days unfold through doing, experimenting, getting stuck, getting unstuck, and seeing where the painting takes you. With only 6 places, the workshop stays immersive, lively, and supportive, with plenty of conversation and laughter alongside long stretches of deep concentration. All materials are provided. Each day includes a delicious seasonal vegetarian lunch, and in the mid-afternoon, there’s cake and prosecco, with tea and coffee available throughout. Three days to paint, with time to think, connect, laugh, and get lost in the work.
